However, that's the only thing annoying about this game is the long title. I will refer to this game as RH: PC since the title is too annoying to type out multiple times. I also did not fight the NG+ superboss or the VoT "secret" boss (players will quickly learn/know what I mean about that last 1). The 2 nodes I missed were because of a quest line having a massive spike in difficulty that I decided I didn't want to deal with. The multitude of additional sidequests introduced in the 3DS version eventually saw me feeling a little bit overleveled for the main story, but this is to be expected in a 100% completion playthrough in just about any JRPG.ĥ3h 21m PlayedGame playtime is recorded in your save file. By the end of the game, I was still having as much fun with the battle mechanics as I was dozens of hours prior. Racking up large hit combos for extra damage and experience plays a crucial role in efficient fighting, as well as manipulating the turn order and enemy positioning on the field. Even the standard enemy encounters can be challenging and your choice of party makeup often comes down to utilizing skills that have been learned through leveling. The battle system is simple in concept but harbors enough depth to be engaging throughout the experience. Seeing these recycled locations alongside the noticeably short soundtrack might become a little tiresome after several dozen hours of play, but their story significance makes for a compelling reason for the party to revisit these well treaded map points. The world itself is actually pretty small and a lot of areas are revisited numerous times throughout the story, though this is likely a limitation of the original DS hardware. Radiant Historia has a truly stunning and incredibly polished presentation-the visuals are crisp, the music is memorable, the UI is very friendly, and the voice acting adds a lot of charm to the already excellent writing. The time hopping antics will cause some party members to be absent for long sections of the story though, resulting in them being under leveled when they return to the group. ![]() While this may sound detrimental to the pacing, and it arguably is, the menu provides notes for every story event no matter how small to help keep you up to speed at every turn. Sidequests take the same approach, making them all pretty simple if it were not for the frequent time hopping. Oftentimes, hitting a roadblock of sorts in one history will see you changing focus to an alternate timeline, only to circle back once again with a means of progressing further. The story sees you hopping between timelines and altering numerous histories alongside some well-developed and nuanced characters. I would still recommend this remaster, as the added features, quality of life changes, and polished visuals are all improvements from the original, but I really suggest just playing through the original content in Append Mode.Ħ0h 48m PlayedA truly excellent JRPG in every sense. So alas, instead of a solid 8.5 experience, I'm left with a mid 7 experience. It is no exaggeration for me to write that it almost ruined the entire experience for me. And as for a new ending, instead we have an unmemorable one where everyone gets to live happily and past villains are all redeemed with no developed writing to back it all up. But with the addition of the third new timeline, not only does it make that previous final villain do a complete 180 into an allly, it also replaces the final villain with a mindless, evil for the sake of being evil world threat that, for all its size, fails to hold any of the presence and investment that the previous final villain had. Most importantly, the open ended nature of the ending leaves you thinking about those themes and the lessons you could get from them. ![]() It's beautiful, touching, and very coherent with the game's themes of respecting and learning from the past, living and enjoying every moment in the present, and holding out hope for the future. Once you reach the original true ending, said final villain chooses to sacrifice himself to save the world so that his dear foster son can live through the world he carved out for himself. As an example, in the original, you had a sympathetic final villain that wanted to destroy the world all so that his foster son won't have to sacrifice himself for it. However, the added content, specifically the new significant character and a 3rd new timeline, both spit in the face of what made the original's writing so great. Was enjoyable from the first fight to the last. Very fun battle system, and very unique as well. 39h 42m PlayedOriginal game is a solid 8.5 experience. ![]()
